Book Description:

Well, I do have some knowledge of Japanese History, but I just wanted a broad overview, so I got this book. The book is very good. It is 252 pages, which is still short for a short history of a country but that's good enough. The book is an Australian printing, and has never been revised and is not revised. One mistake I saw on Amazon is that it says that the book was published in 2003 and that it is 268 pages, but I checked with the publisher and she said that it was indeed published in 2002, and it is only 252 pages, there is no revised edition and the edition is not revised. Okay, let's get started with the review! The book discusses everything, it gives info on the geography and the early prehistory of ancient times, and goes on to the Yamato Dynasty's start, how the government borrowed from Chinese and Korean cultures, and how the early capitals at Nara and Heian (now Kyoto) were influenced by China and Korea.

Book Description:

Controversy has steadily shadowed the 1968 sinking of the U.S. nuclear submarine Scorpion. The navy's official version of accidental sinking on a routine mission was challenged by allegations that the Scorpion was in fact torpedoed while shadowing a Soviet task force. Further rumors indict the spy John Walker for providing confidential codes to the Soviets, enabling them to track the submarine. Yet another account purports that the Soviets destroyed the Scorpion in retaliation for the sinking of one of their own subs. The two navies eventually called a truce rather than risk further disrupting relations. Sewell, a submarine veteran, and Preisler, a writer of techno-thrillers, add little new evidence in their version of the story; their new data is unfailingly familiar and they never succeed in making a persuasive case for the conspiracy and cover-up they claim occurred. Instead, Sewell and Preisler devote more time to anecdotes about the Scorpion's crew and their families and little vignettes of the routines on board a nuclear sub. What is undeniably useful is the book's demonstration of the high numbers of accidents between ships and aircrafts that were accepted as routine during much of the Cold War. All Hands Down highlights a truth no less relevant today: international incidents are in good part constructions mutually agreed upon after the event.

Book Description:

Here is the shocking true saga of the Irish American mob. In Paddy Whacked, bestselling author and organized crime expert T. J. English brings to life nearly two centuries of Irish American gangsterism, which spawned such unforgettable characters as Mike “King Mike” McDonald, Chicago's subterranean godfather Big Bill Dwyer, New York's most notorious rumrunner during Prohibition Mickey Featherstone, troubled Vietnam vet turned Westies gang leader and James “Whitey” Bulger, the ruthless and untouchable Southie legend. Stretching from the earliest New York and New Orleans street wars through decades of bootlegging scams, union strikes, gang wars, and FBI investigations, Paddy Whacked is a riveting tour de force that restores the Irish American gangster to his rightful preeminent place in our criminal history — and penetrates to the heart of the American experience.

Book Description:

This comprehensive account of the history of Chinese lexicography is the first book on the subject to be published in English. It traces the development of Chinese lexicography over three millennia, from the Zhou Dynasty (1046 BC-256 BC) to the Qing Dynasty (1616-1911). Revealing how the emergence of lexicographical culture in ancient China was linked to the teaching of ancient characters, it describes the subsequent development of primers, thesauruses, and dictionaries of all major types, including those of dialects and technical terms. These works originated and appeared in ancient China, predating their western counterparts by hundreds of years: and in one form or another most of them remain in use today. Throughout their account the authors show how changes in the organization, content, use and researches of Chinese lexicographical works reflected broader social and political developments. This book not only makes an important and original contribution to the history of Chinese lexicography and the social and cultural history of China but also provides illuminating insights into world lexicography and new forms of comparative researches in lexicography in the global context.

Book Description:

A treasury of 31 beautiful keepsakes, this book contains various projects including baskets, birdhouses, bowls, boxes, cabinets, chests, kitchenware, planters and more. These are two decorative craft books from authors with considerable track records. Cagle, with 14 books and articles in Good Housekeeping and Redbook to her credit, here presents 31 projects applying fruit and flowers to baskets, birdhouses, boxes, kitchenware, and planters. Surface preparation, transfer patterns, painting, and glazing methods are covered in a glossy format. Wellford narrows her focus to painting only animals, and painting them only on rocks. Her first book on this topic (The Art of Painting Animals on Rocks, North Light, 1994) sold a remarkable 85,000 copies. These cute skunks on rocks, toads on rocks, mice on rocks, and cheese on rocks are fun and easy. Both books are recommended for popular craft collections.

Book Description:

Classical statistical techniques fail to cope well with deviations from a standard distribution. Robust statistical methods take into account these deviations while estimating the parameters of parametric models, thus increasing the accuracy of the inference. Research into robust methods is flourishing, with new methods being developed and different applications considered. Robust Statistics sets out to explain the use of robust methods and their theoretical justification. It provides an up-to-date overview of the theory and practical application of the robust statistical methods in regression, multivariate analysis, generalized linear models and time series. This unique book: Enables the reader to select and use the most appropriate robust method for their particular statistical model. Features computational algorithms for the core methods. Covers regression methods for data mining applications. Includes examples with real data and applications using the S-Plus robust statistics library. Describes the theoretical and operational aspects of robust methods separately, so the reader can choose to focus on one or the other. Supported by a supplementary website featuring time-limited S-Plus download, along with datasets and S-Plus code to allow the reader to reproduce the examples given in the book. Robust Statistics aims to stimulate the use of robust methods as a powerful tool to increase the reliability and accuracy of statistical modelling and data analysis. It is ideal for researchers, practitioners and graduate students of statistics, electrical, chemical and biochemical engineering, and computer vision. There is also much to benefit researchers from other sciences, such as biotechnology, who need to use robust statistical methods in their work.
